Larger nuisances can be a problem in the garden. A cat will be sure to curl up in the middle of your choicest container with no heed for the unfortunate plant, and dogs will often pee on pots or dig up newly planted bulbs or seedlings.

The best way to deter cats is to insert lots of short canes, which will be hidden as the plants grow. To save leaves from the burning effects of dog urine, place a pot in a large outer pot or raise it off the ground. You can also train dogs not to use a particular part of the garden.

Squirrels have a nose for bulbs, and can often be caught digging in pots. Putting a layer of chicken wire on the top of the compost may discourage them.
