Decking is simply a suspended timber floor constructed outdoors. It consists of a framework of load-bearing timber joists to which boards are fixed. The framework must be strong enough to support any load that is likely to be placed on the decking, including garden furniture and plant containers – as well as people.

The simplest type of deck is built directly on top of an existing area of paving – concrete, paving slabs or pavers – as long as this is flat and mainly level with a very slight drainage slope away from the house. On sloping or uneven sites, the framework can be supported by vertical posts set into the ground. They can be secured either with an in-ground concrete collar, like a fence post, or using a metal fence post spike. Separate sections of decking can be built in this way to create a terraced effect.

Raised decks higher than 3 feet (1 m) can provide a superb vantage point over the garden, but they need a more substantial supporting framework and have to be fitted with guard rails.

When constructing any type of deck, but particularly a raised deck, it is a good idea to first consult with a professional to make sure that you are doing things right.
