A gate for your arbor is constructed with stiles, rails, lattice and brackets. The methods of cutting and assembly are the same as those of the basic archway.
There are minor differences though. The pattern for the gate brackets is the same as for the archway brackets, but with one end cut off to make the gate brackets shorter. Also, while the archway brackets are installed flush with the outside faces of the arbor posts, the gate brackets are centered in the thickness of the gate.
Cut the lattice mounting strips in the same way as the strips for the archway sides. Install them in the same way using a spacer block to inset the first set of strips from the back edge of the gate frame. Cut the gate lattice from the leftover portion of the panel used for the side lattices. Remember to wear both eye protection and gloves when cutting the lattice.
When the gate is constructed, sanded and primed, attach the hinges and barrel bolt. Hold the gate in position to mark and drill holes in the posts for the hinge screws and the barrel bolt. Drill the holes, but do not hang the gate at this time. It will be easier to move and “plant” the arbor in the ground without the gate attached.
