Framing the deck of a gazebo is actually easier than it might first appear. Use these instructions to help you build the framing for your gazebo's deck.

  • First, build an I-shaped beam assembly from treated 2×6's nailed together with two outside rim joists at the ends. This will serve as the support for the deck.

  • Now position this beam assembly over the two center foundation blocks placed beforehand and then nail the rest of the joists, including the outer rim joists, to the assembly. Nail the rim joists together, using three 16d galvanized box nails. Then add the joist hangers and 2×6 joists.

  • Next, check the deck framing to make sure it is level. Adjust the framing members or add shims as necessary before you proceed to ensure that the deck will have a level surface. If you do need to add any shims, use scrap pieces of treated wood.

  • Nail in the 2×6 blocking at the four points of the I-shaped beam assembly. You'll need the blocking later to support the posts.

  • Make sure that all the diagonal measurements are equal. If they're not, you may be able to coax the frame into alignment now with a few hammer blows to the corners.
