More insects are beneficial or neutral to your plants than they are harmful. When beneficial insects, such as those that eat pests, are killed, a dependency on chemicals is created. Before you kill everything that moves, the minute you notice some holes in your plant leaves, take an affected leaf or photograph of the problem to a reputable garden center, or check online or in a book on plant pests and diseases, to find out what’s wrong.

If necessary, you can choose the treatment that will attack that problem specifically.

Remember that one or two holes, although not attractive, are not usually fatal and may not need any form of treatment. If you must resolve pest problems with chemicals, remember that they are safer on indoor plants, because the environment is contained, and the chemicals are unlikely to affect creatures other than the target pests.
