Porch and door lights that are left on for hours at night attract a lot of insects that often wind up indoors. Here are a couple of ways to keep them at bay:
- Turn off outdoor lights when you don't need them. Better yet, consider installing motion sensors, which turn lights on when movement is detected and turn them off after a few minutes—before insects have a chance to gather. Outdoor light fixtures with built-in motion sensors are available at home centers and electrical supply stores.
- Use yellow-coated, all-weather bulbs in outdoor fixtures. The yellow pigment makes light less visible, and therefore less alluring, to flying bugs.
