Vary the colors of this Christmas gift tag, perhaps blue and silver or green and gold, for a change from the standard green and red. Or coordinate the colors with your gift wrap.
- poster board in the colors of your choice
- craft knife
- ruler
- scissors
- for each tree, 1 1/3 yards 1/8-inch-wide ribbon
- for each tree, 12 inches 1/4-inch-wide ribbon
- tapestry needle
- From the poster board, cut triangles 4 inches wide at the base and 5 inches high.
- On a scrap of card, mark 11 intervals, 3/8 inch apart, along one edge. This will be the template for cutting the notches for the ribbon.
- Lay the template along one side of the triangle. Starting 1/2 inch from the base, snip a 1/8-inch notch at each mark on the template. Repeat on the other side. Using the tapestry needle, make a small hole between the two notches at the top of the triangle.
- Fold the length of narrow ribbon in half to determine the center point. Place the center point midway between the first two notches at the base of the triangle and start crisscrossing the ribbon around the tree, pulling it into the notches and crossing each end over as if you were threading shoe laces. Pull the ribbon tightly into each notch as you go.
- When you have reached the last two notches at the top of the triangle, thread both ends of ribbon through the eye of the tapestry needle and push them through the hole.
- Fold the wider ribbon in half to determine the center point. Cross the two ends at the center point to form a loose bow. Pass the double strand of narrow ribbon from the top of the tree around the center of the bow and back through the hole. Pull the needle through until the bow is held tightly—this forms the “knot” of the bow as well as secures the bow to the card.
- Remove the needle and tie the two ends in a knot behind the hole. Trim the ends of the narrow ribbons about 6 inches above the top of the tag and knot them together to make a loop for hanging.
