Follow the instructions below to build a curved bench. The seat for the curved bench is built much the same way as the railings, using nominal 6-inch beveled cedar siding.

  • Position the steel support pipes accurately to achieve smoothly flowing curves. Use a full length of cedar siding as your shaping guide, curving it to form the outer edge of the final shape.

  • Now determine how wide your bench will be. Measure half of the distance back from the curved edge to locate the support pipes; space them evenly about 3 feet apart.

Most of the cedar siding for the curved bench is composed of half-width strips that rest on top of the 2×4 horizontal supports. The two thicknesses at the inside and outside edges are full-width strips that cover the ends of the supports.

  • With yellow wood glue and screws, secure each successive layer of siding to the previous one, alternating the bevels top to bottom. Toenail 1-1/2 inch galvanized finish nails into the horizontal support every few layers to hold the bench top in place. When all the layers are complete, level the high spots with a hand plane and sand the surface smooth with a belt sander.
