Follow the instructions listed below to build a pergola roof.
-
Cut the single 2×8 end beams to the outside dimensions of the posts. Measure the distance between the single beams, then cut the double 2×8 beams to butt snugly between them. Position the beams to form a box that fits flush with the outside edges of the wrapped posts. Nail a post cap to the column tops inside the beam corners. Join the double beam members with 16d galvanized box nails and place the double beams on the columns. Nail the double beams to a single beam at each end. Nail the single beams into the post caps and toenail their corners into the 4×4.
-
Measure and cut the posts' trim pieces to size. Nail the 1×6 sections to the bottom of each column, then the 1×3 pieces to the top. Measure and cut the fascias and nail them to the single and double beams.
-
Using a saber saw, cut decorative scallops on the ends of each 10-foot 2×6 stringer. Lift them onto the tops of the beams, spacing them evenly. To support the end stringers, toenail them from outside to the single beams. Position the stringers to overhang the fascia by 1/2 inch along the single beams. Space the interior stringers evenly. Toenail them to the double beams with 16d galvanized box nails.
-
Measure and cut the frieze boards to fit between the stringers. Let these boards overhang the fascias by 1/4 inch. Toenail the frieze boards to the stringers and double beams with 8d galvanized nails.
