There’s a secret weapon you can use to guard against messy tools – it’s the cooking-oil mister you buy to keep fat to a minimum when frying. Spray a coating of oil on a shovel or trowel before using it and you will find that even sticky clay soil will slide straight off. Spray the blades and underside of your lawn mower and wet grass won’t stick to them. Another trick is to keep a bucket of sand in the garage or shed and plunge a spade or hoe into the sand before putting it away. The sand will scrape off any dirt or other mess.
