Tools that are regularly cleaned and neatly stored are always ready for use. So keep these tips in mind to help you properly maintain your garden tools for year-round use.
Allocate storage space
Allocate storage space for each tool where it is easily accessible and cannot be damaged. Suspend large items with cutting edges, such as spades and hoes, from hooks or clips on a wall or door and keep smaller tools together in a drawer or a box.
Clean all tools after use
Scrape or brush off soil and plant debris, especially from the handles, where hardened soil can cause discomfort during use. Make sure to wipe metal blades with an oily rag to prevent rust.
Keep cutting tools sharp
Pruning equipment needs regular honing to keep it sharp so that it cuts without damaging the plant and without undue effort. Spade and hoe blades are easier to use if you hammer out any dents that may form and occasionally file the edge sharp.
Clean, sharpen and oil or grease
Make sure to clean, sharpen and oil or grease all metal parts.
End of the growing season
At the end of the growing season, inspect all of your tools before storing them over the winter and make sure to clean them all thoroughly. Check and repair or replace damaged handles and wipe those made of wood with linseed oil.

For safety purposes, make sure to hang tools with sharp edges high along walls.
