Mowers can be a helpful addition to your garden shed, as they can help speed up the process of any kind of work. Keep the suggestions below in mind when trying to decided which mower is right for you.

Cylinder mowers

These have a number of blades arranged in a spiral to form a rotating cylinder. Cutting occurs as the blades pass close to a fixed blade set just below the cylinder, rather like the action of scissor blades. The quality of the cut depends on the rotation speed of the cylinder, how closely the rotating blades are passing the fixed blade and the number of blades on the cylinder–the more blades there are, the finer the cut of the grass.

Rotary

A single blade or several blades, made from toughened metal or a hardened plastic, rotate horizontally at high speed, slicing through the grass. The effectiveness of the cut depends on the speed of rotation and the blades’ sharpness.

Both types of mower produce a good finish if used correctly, but only rotary mowers are able to cope with cutting down long grass. Both will also produce a striped effect if equipped with a roller behind the cutting blades–stripes result not from the cutting action but from the roller pressing down the grass.
